Sound of the Week: Fidget Spinner Mayhem
There is a new craze spreading around the world in the form of Fidget Spinners. If you haven’t seen them, they are tiny triangular toys that fit between your pointer finger and your thumb and rotate in an alluring fashion—and they are marketed as items that fixate wandering attention spans. Similar to the bygone days of Slap Bracelets, Yo-Yo’s, Pogs, Tech Decks, Beanie Babies, Crazy Bones, Beyblades and other items that can be shown off and traded, kids today are completely entranced with this new trend.
These toys are typically silent, so we wondered what a Fidget Spinner would say if it could express itself. Therefore, this week’s Sound of the Week will explore our collection of royalty-free audio tracks to find a sound effect that encompasses all that is a Fidget Spinner.
And the winner is…
After looking through our collection, we decided the only sound effect that could possibly work for this trend is that of the mosquito buzz. Similar to the pesky pest, the Fidget Spinner swooped in with the warm weather and now seem to be everywhere. The toys, much like the bug, are also exceptionally irritating. While they may focus short attention spans, the focus tends to fall on the toy rather than the task at hand. This sound also seems to be a good fit since it’s basically a revamped New Year’s noisemaker–minus the noise. If you took video of a Fidget Spinner and watched it in parallel with the noise presented above, we’re confident you’ll discover that the two are meant for one another. In a cruel, cruel world anyway.
While this critique may have come off a little strong, a handful of people swear by the Fidget Spinner, and because of that, we cannot fully dismiss it as a helpful item. If you disagree with our sound selection, be sure to let us know and post any sounds you feel are a better fit. In the meantime, be sure to download this track and check back next week as we continue our Sound of the Week series, where we focus on royalty-free stock music and sound effects that reflect the everyday moments happening all around us.
